Amazon’s upcoming film, A Sprinkle of History, has lined up an impressive cast to tell the story behind America’s favorite ice cream topping: sprinkles. The film will dive into the history of jimmies (as they’re also known) and the 1950s diner craze that helped make them famous.

Amazon’s A Sprinkle of History is a dark comedy crime thriller biopic that dives into the gritty, unexpected origins of the American sprinkle and diner industries. The plot centers on Sam Born, an ambitious immigrant confectioner, who unknowingly finds himself in the crosshairs of a ruthless turf war over the candy business in mid-century America.

Leading the cast is Oscar-nominated Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Billions), playing Sam Born, the founder of Just Born, a candy company credited with bringing sprinkles to the U.S. Toby Jones (The Hunger Games, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) joins the cast as Walter Anderson, one of the founders of White Castle, who played a big part in shaping the American diner scene. Wilson Bethel (Daredevil, Hart of Dixie) and Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation, Big Little Lies) will take on the roles of Bert Baskin and Irv Robbins, founders of Baskin-Robbins. Rounding out the cast is David Schwimmer (Friends, The People v. O.J. Simpson) as Bill Rosenberg, the founder of Dunkin’ Donuts, who helped make donuts (and sprinkled donuts) a key part of American snack culture.

Amazon Studios is producing A Sprinkle of History, with its original film division overseeing the project. The film is directed by Andrew Ahn based on a script by Anthony Bagarozzi.

Filming begins this month, with Amazon planning a holiday release in 2025, possibly around Thanksgiving or Christmas.
